The Worst Book I Have Read — Maybe Ever?
Lapovna by Ottessa Moshfegh: a rant
Let’s cut to the chase.
I finished this book this week and it is going down in history as one of the worst books I have ever read in recent memory.
The book in question: Lapovna by Ottessa Moshfegh.
This is the second Ottessa Moshfegh book that I have read, the first being My Year of Rest and Relaxation. My Year of Rest and Relaxation I had extremely high hopes for, I love a-woman-staring-into-the-void, melancholy kind of read, but despite feeling fairly conflicted gave it a lukewarm 2.5/5 stars.
From that book I had a fair idea of the authors writing style, her books are well-written, however, she loses me as I’m coming to realize plot points are often thrown in simply for shock value, and don’t add anything to the overarching story.
And my goodness did this ever hold true for Lapovna. Buckle up, my friends.
Lapovna is quite the departure from what the author Otessa Moshfegh normally writes. This book seemed wholly unique, complete with a creepy cover that draws you in depicting a dead sheep. Lapovna is a story set in medieval times about a fiefdom and its inhabitants.
